I was in the same boat as you (except I wasn't the ex-girlfriend). My "friend" decided that even though she was my friend for 5 years and his girlfriend for 6 months, their relationship was more important. She stopped being friends with me because her boyfriend and I hated each other. But it's ok; I now have friends who are real, will stick by me through thick and thin, and won't assume that I'm just jealous/mean/bitchy when I give them honest opinions.
If you want to let her figure it out for herself, that's fine. But I think it would be better to tell her, but I can see (from the above story) that she might take it badly as my "friend" did. It's a hard situation. I hope everything turns out ok!
