I try every single day to be happy, I try to make my life feel worthy but it doesnt work like that. I have a chemical imbalance in my brain which causes me to be depressed (manic depressant) and it does not matter how many tablets i take or how positive i try to be I still can not shake the feeling of unhappiness and loneness

Although this is very hard for some, it is very good advice.
Being sad is a waste of my life.
I want to waste as little of my life as possible.
So I'm happy with whatever.

you choose how you react to situations... like when youre a kid and you say 'jonny made me color on the walls' and your parents say 'no jonny told you to, but you chose to,and for that you are grounded.' you can sit around and blame the world for feeling bad...you sit around thinking no one understands you, no one loves you, ect...or you can get up, love yourself, and just be happy with who you are...because thats all that really matters...and would you really want it to be easy? bc the best things arent easy.

I'm glad you have the feeling that you want people to be happy, but it isn't always a choice. there are clinical disorders like depression, social anxiety, et cetera that can't just be solved with a choice. It takes medication, therapy, and time. And love.

I know you're concerned about them and you want them to be happy.
That's a perfectly good thing to want.
But please understand, depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain.
Sometimes, you really can't choose it. No matter how much you want to.

Though I do believe happiness is a choice, there are outside factors (and sometimes, inside) that make it next to impossible to initiate happiness.

Few people realize they really do have control over how they feel. It's hard. But it's always your decision to feel one way or another. Just sometimes things are stacked up so high on the side of unhappiness that it makes it extremely difficult to choose happiness. I like this secret.

I have severe depression, and I still struggle with it. But it helps a HELL of a lot more when you force yourself not to wallow.

If you're just sitting there, self-pitying yourself and saying you can't change how you feel- how will that make anything better? You have to make yourself believe that you can be happy, you have to force yourself to look on the brighter side of things- it's not easy and it's not a magical button that changes your entire outlook- it's a process, which is what I think the ST is trying to say.

I still find that unhappiness and emptiness in my life, but it's not as all-consuming as it once was because I refuse to let it rule my life anymore.

I'm so faving this secret :XD: More people need to see it.

During the hard times, it does help to force myself to do something. It's tough, but you have to make the decision to help yourself.

This isn't something that will ever go away. I'll struggle with it the rest of my life, but I can do things to make things not so bad.

Reply

Yeah my mom said that to me and I didn't believe her. But it's actually true. You do choose how you interact with the world and with yourself. No one makes you do or feel anything.

And maybe you can't control how you feel but it doesn't have to control YOU.

:iconyesimafreak:

I don't think it's true, simply because I think that saying "No one can make you feel something you don't want to," is basically like being a completely unemotional void that only feels when they want. Humans can't just simply turn off their emotions, and be blocks can they?

I never said it "controlled" you, I said you couldn't control how you feel.

Seeing as what you said, when I was depressed, it was all because I wanted to choose to be depressed, is that what you're saying? Because I didn't choose that, and I didn't choose to have anger problems, and anxiety problems. Neither did I chose to be sensitive.

I know that humans choose how they interact with the world, but usually it's based off of some kind of treatment that they had received before they chose to act that way, just like a personality, it's based on others interactions with you.

I wouldn't classify clinical depression or real psychological problems as the same as day to day feelings. Those are serious and difficult manage and generally caused by something one can't help - i.e. and imbalance of hormones in the brain.
But seriously - I always thought it was stupid when my mom said that to me - that sort of optimistic attitude which is so obnoxious when you feel you can't help it. But this year I realized it - I tried to implement it into my life - to love myself/be happy for what I have/be on the bright side - and it works. A positive attitude makes a big difference. I don't mean to sound pretentious or obnoxious, but we could all do to be a little bit happier, and if you can do something about it (which we can) then we should.

Okay, so when I'm really depressed, and people want me to be happy, I'm supposed to perk up, just because someone told me that I have to have a positive attitude? I believe in showing people's real emotions, whether they be happy, depressing, angry or any other emotion, because I think it's downright pathetic when people hide behind false happiness.

And I am on the bright side. Example - The world sucks a whole lot, but it doesn't suck as much as it could.

No, like the secret, and I am saying - no one can make you feel something. But you can choose how to let things affect you. That's all I mean. It's not for anyone but yourself that you are said (general you, not you specifically) and it's not for anyone else but you that you are happy. And even though it's hard sometimes, it can make life far more manageable.

And sure, if you don't agree or don't believe it, it won't work for you, will it? but that's your choice.

#1, We probably have different lives, obviously. And seeing as my life hasn't been the most cheery in the world, I obviously don't much good in it.

#2, The way I see what you're saying is that people have to morph how they really feel into something positive, simply because someone's telling them it's their fault they're depressed and hurting.

-Of course we have different lives - I'm not trying to judge your life. Mine isn't all happygolucky either - I've had my share of sadness, depression, anxiety.

-That's not what I mean. I'm not saying you have to force yourself to be happy. I just think when it comes down to it, you have to rely on yourself and not on other people, no matter what has happened. Blaming other people doesn't help - ever. And if you want to be happy, you have to be proactive at it.

I think that depression can be conquered if someone wants to, they can take control of their life whenever they want. I know people are definitely going to disagree with me, but it's just a severe form of unhappiness. Go do something fun, do what you like. There are people who love you, so spend time around them. Depression is a thing I really don't understand, I see it as temporary. I'm sure whoever it is will get over it, you just need to comfort them and tell them you're worried. Knowing that someone cares for you is very uplifting.

I'll voice your first disagreement, here. :) Depression isn't simply a "severe form of unhappiness", it can be caused by hormone deficiency. Shortage of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and/or norepinephrine (or their respective receptors) is a common culprit. "Norepinephrine may be related to alertness and energy as well as anxiety, attention, and interest in life; [lack of] serotonin to anxiety, obsessions, and compulsions; and dopamine to attention, motivation, pleasure, and reward, as well as interest in life." Source.

Real depression can be temporary, but it can also go on for many, many years. It can't be alleviated so easily as you seem to think. :bulletblue:

Telling the clinically depressed to be happy is like telling the cancer patient to just get over it.

It just doesn't work that way. I wish it did.

The clinically depressed aren't sad. They are clinically depressed. A condition - not a feeling.

I think probably this ST is talking about something that is true: it is your choice how you interpret everything in your life. You can let things roll off you, you can look on the bright side, you can choose to love yourself - or you can choose to let things get you down. Everyone says that right? And it never seems true. But it is.

And no, not necessarily for those with severe psychological problems. But they aren't the same.

Uh, yeah it's a feeling.
A major feeling that has gone to the point of screwing up your life. A feeling that is so strong you can actually feel it in your muscles and bones.

And some depressed people can overcome depression through therapy alone-- the main point is proving to them is that yes, happiness is a choice.

It's a chemical imbalance in the brain. And yeah, you can choose to get help, but I just mean I'm not going to lump those with conditions like Depression with those who just have a negative attitude.

And I don't understand your last sentence - do you mean you agree with the secret?
