If you feel like that, why don't you try and do something that will help? Be the different person among the others and make a change. Because it is sad how we take with little consideration to the consequences.

Thoughts like this torment me every day.
Throwing away trash has become nauseating just because I know it won't magically go away. And I recycle what I can, whilst doubting it will help much.
I use so much water to take a 12 minute shower.
I try not to eat much of the meat my mother prepares. I feel like I'm killing more animals every time I eat meat.
And everyone hates it when I talk about this uncomfortable feeling that humans are sucking up this beautiful planet through a straw and asking for seconds.
We're the most destructive species on the planet, made up of mostly kind-hearted individuals who just take what they're given without questioning it. But they are afraid to look at the damage.

I am actually pretty sure that the human race has had this trait since about forever. Just because nowadays there are more goods we yearn for, or a greater variety of goods, that doesn't mean that humans have become corrupt in the modern era. It is in a person's nature to want more, because this way a person is able to cover more of their needs, starting from necessary, biological ones, and moving up to the need to have schooling, entertainement etc. Why would anyone want to limit themselves and the needs they can cover if the means are there for the taking? Why limit your own potential to have, in your own estimation, a better life?

I think the whole issue here is the prevalent belief that, by wanting more and more goods, you're preventing someone else from having them, as such you are exploiting others or you're effectively limiting their own potential, which makes you selfish/horrible/shallow etc. But I think we all have reasons to believe that this idea is, at least partly, false. Does working hard and using the money you earn to buy many goods considered a greedy behavior? You would just be doing what you think is the best for your life, and no one would be hurt in the process. Being greedy doesn't necessarily mean that you are exploiting someone's weakness, and as long as no one is hurt, I honestly cannot see why wanting the best for yourself has to be considered a negative to one's personality.

And as for the cases when someone does get hurt, well, that's pretty much what crime is all about. Even the mentally-ill who commit crimes do so to satisfy a need they have, which of course does not make much sense to sane people or which is simply illogical. However, we are not allowed to satisfy any need we may ever have regardless if anyone is hurt or not, seeing as such behavior would lead to conflict and it would then be impossible for people to live together. Which is why crime, that is trying to cover a need by or while hurting someone, is punished by the State.

I agree. In fact, during our lunch period at my school last week, an adult came into the room an announced that anyone who recycled and composted correctly would get a piece of candy. Over 3/4 of the kids got up immediately to throw stuff away.

It sickens me, but then when you think about it it applies to everything. Everyone has greed.

I know EXACTLY how you feel. Human beings have grown into such greedy and disgusting things. It's something that we have to learn to live with, though, because it's not changing anytime soon.

Humans are the only species to kill each other for really no reason- animals only kill others of their species for their needed survival.

Not that I wholeheartedly disagree but animals and humans live in completely different terms.
Animals kill to ensure their meal, their territory, their reproduction, because in the natural world, that's their priorities, their worries, if they were to be advanced beings like we are they would probably do the same as we do.
In the urban world, the human society, you need to to come on top of what you want and what you do in order to be anything and sustain yourself. Is it bad to cut down trees, kill tons of animals, extract the natural resources of the Earth? Yes it is.
But that's also how we survived so far, we reproduced in large numbers and we require the resources around us to keep making progress and sustain the habits we already have. Changes take many years to happen and old habits die hard.
You can't cut a few strings now without jeopardizing someone's life somewhere in the planet. What about those that make a living cutting down trees(but they also plant them and cycle through zones that should be cut-down)? What about those that create cattle just for the purpose of then using to feed tons of people? One thing I learned - you cut the most basic of resources and you'll create a huge chain reaction of disasters in our society and economy. Everything's entwined, so think before you think decided to try and 'stop' something you deem wrong.

Though animals only take what they absolutely need.
A deer wouldn't harm a plant unless it was hungry. Yet we feel the need to cut plants and bring them inside our homes to die. Not to mention we would cut down large numbers of trees just to make our lives easier (to make roads, for example).
So in a way, non-human animals are a lot nicer to the world than we are </3

That sums it up. We are all hypocrites to some extent. How much is up to you. But do something instead of whining about it.

Honestly you've just got to learn to love the little things. Once you start looking at things differently, it just changes how you see the world, it impacts you in a way I cannot explain. Everyday I wake up I'm so incredibly happy to be alive, because the chances of me, as who I am, being alive is incomprehensible! Winning the lottery doesn't even compare to me being alive! The fact that I was born into a loving family with two parents is incredibly, that I grew up having self-esteem, that I live in a world where we have amazing medicine that's continually progressing day by day. That the water I drink is clean and I don't have to worry about finding a warm and safe place to sleep. That the country I was so lucky to be born in is one of the most excepting in the world, not as racist, homophobic or sexist as many others. That I am healthy and can go outside and feel the warmth of the sun on my skin and feel the wind blow through my hair. That despite not even coming close to making $20,000 a year I'm the happiest because I just look at all the things I do have, not the things I don't.

You can learn to think in a different way, it'll take time and work, but humans are never stagnant, we're capable of great things when we put our mind to it.

I really love your outlook on life. I suffer from depression so sometimes it's really hard for me to see the good in the world. But I've started a thankful journal where I write down things I am thankful for at the start and end of my day. That way I always end on a positive note. So slowly, but surely I'm learning to love the little things. :D
