I'm going through a period of religious questioning right now, and my fear of being forgotten is worsening steadily. Right there with you.

I'm an atheist. I'm not scared of death, my problem is that since nothing really matters in the end, why shouldn't I just end it now?

I'm an atheist who is not afraid of death as well. But the point is, I think living is the only purpose of live. Who cares if it serves a greater good or not? And if it is like this, I think I can just as well enjoy it and make as much out of it as I can   :)
That being said, it would surely hurt your relatives and friends very much if you died. You have to consider this as well.

You know, when I was younger I felt a lot like you do. But that's life. There are periods when you think the whole world is against you and periods when you think everything is funny and exciting. In both periods you can learn, collect experiences and grow. And if you don't have a thing you enjoy to do yet I can only give you the advise to go out and try to find the one thing you really like to do. It doesn't even have to be only one thing, there can be plenty of other things that you like and maybe you will be sad when you realise that you cannot do everything.
What is much more important is that you stick with one or just a few things and try to learn or even perfect it. In the beginning this will be very hard, and even in the process of learning there will be frustrating moments when you don't think you move forward anymore. But if don't give up I promise you it will be worth it and you will begin to enjoy those things or activities, and with them you grow and will begin to enjoy your life.
And if you meet the right people everything will be even better. Even though, like i said earlier, life will never only consist only of rainbows and butterflies^^
At least that's what my experience taught me.

tell that to someone who cares

not being rude, what i mean by that, is that those words of wisdom could probably help someone

Well, okay. I just answered your question, by the way.
If you just want to keep staying in your little miserable corner and continue to feel indifferent about everything, then that's none of my buisiness.

Just don't kill yourself. That never solved any problems before and never will. That is all I ask for.

Faith overpowers religious. Ask God to for you to pass your next test or whatever, and believe that you really will. That's an example of faith.
Religious is, from what I've seen, a whole lot of hypocrites.

You won't be forgotten.

Just believe. I assure you that you can fulfill that dream of yours. I have experienced the same thing, but we have different issues. If they do call you a coward, ignore them :) Just with this, I can say you are a brave person inside. God loves you, and, everyone of us. Being religous does not require a religion, but it is the strength of your FAITH. As long as you believe, as long as you have faith, you will achieve that dream of being religous. And the part of being erased and forgotten... It is impossible that it would happen. :) i really can't explain why right now, but from what I know, there are people who would keep you in their hearts, and pray you are in a better place when that time comes.

I am a Christian. I believe in God. I don't always act like the Christian I should be. I keep secrets from my friends and family. I have friends that are Christian, and friends that are atheist. I always respect other people's beliefs, even when I myself don't believe them or blatantly disagree in my head.

I have a friend at school who is an atheist and I told him I didn't believe in evolution. He went to explain to me about dinosaurs and homo sapiens and everything else they taught in school back when I was in 4th grade. I simply said that I respected what he believes in, and I expect him to respect mine.

I don't shove my beliefs down anyone's throats, but, like anyone else in this world, I will get exasperated and irritated if (this has happened to me before) the person I'm telling my beliefs to interrupts and says things like "that's not true" or "but I heard this" or "that's impossible."

When I say I'm Christian, people think I hate gays and I'm going to shove things down their throat they don't wanna hear. AND THAT'S. NOT. TRUE. Same as when I say I'm Republican, and I don't like Obama. That is my opinion, and I have my information and reasons for it. Everyone that isn't my friend in school called me racist. Back in sixth grade I was picked on for being white because most kids there weren't and I didn't know that "white people are racist." Earlier this year I was offended by students going around saying "Black Jesus" and picking on another Christian student.

I'm not going to tell you you need a religion, but it's always good to have faith in something.

I can relate. There was this one guy a TA'd with last year who was Hispanic. We didn't get along. I tried not to start stuff with him, but sometimes I just had to defend myself. So he told me I was racist, that I hated Mexicans, or whatever. He also laughed when people referred to me as White Chick. I don't shove my Christian beliefs down other people's throats because I know saying things like "You're going to Hell" will solve absolutely nothing and that's not what ANYONE needs to hear.

I absolutely agree. Like I remember this quote (although it's sometimes hard for me to live by it because my temper gets the better of me) "A gentle answer turns away wrath." -Proverbs 15:1

It's better not to snap at people, even when you get riled up, or even if they something really hurtful, because as long as you don't "add fuel to the fire" by commenting on it, then what can they say? If they don't get a response how can they think of something else to say? I was picked on all of sixth grade before I changed schools and I mostly ignored all the people when they said things like that to me. I really just didn't know what to say, I was shocked it was even happening to say the least. I found my self unable to respond and pretended I couldn't hear nor see them.

I know it's not the best plan, but I guess you could say it got me by well enough.

Religion is majoritively a choice.
As a non christian growing up in a CoE school i was made to sing hymns, prayers and learn about the bible.
I am an agnostic.
Some people say this is because im not strong enough to form my own opinion but i say that its because i feel that everybody has their own opinion and shouldnt be discriminated because of it.
That includes you. Dont change your way of life because of other people, if you change it because of you, well done for having the strength to do that :)
You are your own person. In the end your the person who has to live with the decision
Stay strong

I hope you can find your peace, no matter which path that is. If it's one where you end up becoming religious, I hope it's a path that becomes clear to you. Which... Either path is fine, really. It's all about finding the happiness in your life.

If... It brings you any, any comfort whatsoever, I don't think you're a coward. I've known plenty of strong religious folk, and plenty of atheists.

I'll remember you. I know that... Because I've had this secret on my dash since it was submitted, and I've been looking for the right way to respond. You've been in my thoughts, and you'll continue to be.

I won't forget you.

Now, I'm not the owner of this secret, but I want to say thank you. I live in a very religious household. They won't accept me, as an atheist, so I keep it in the dark. I mean, I'm not overly aggressive about atheism. Religion does a lot of good, except for the crazy fanatics. But yet, even though I accept their views, they won't accept mine, calling it stupid and telling me that atheists have their heads up their bu**s. I hate it. So thank you. I'm glad there are reasonable religious people in this world, that can coexist with atheist and not fight, or hurt, or kill, or argue. Thank you so much. You've really brought tears to my eyes.

You're very, very welcome... I'm sorry you have to go through that, right now. I keep in the mindset of a person should go to whatever comforts them, whether it be religion or not, and respect that not everyone finds comfort in the same things I do--And that's perfectly okay. I'm really glad to have shown you there are people like that, and I seriously wish you the best with everything.

If you are atheist, you believe that there is nothing after death. Why does there need to be? There is nothing before your birth as well--
People are remembered for their deeds, their character, their love. These things are proven on Earth, not before or afterward. This life is the only one you have to build a legacy, to be remembered... why spend it frozen in fear that you'll be gone someday, when you are wasting the time you have to prove that fear wrong?

Dedicate yourself to something. Flap your bufferfly wings and make the volcanoes erupt on the other side of the world. There is a reason why many atheists join the Humanist movement.

Besides, what good is an afterlife if those people you are afraid will forget you are in the here and now?

Meh, I can relate to a lesser extent. I don't worry about what comes next because there's no point, but I do wish I could believe. Used to be religious, lost my faith, because without proof I just feel blind.

I just hope people know, it's okay to be scared. Fear keeps you safe and makes you human.

Those 'people' you're referring to... they're the cowardly ones. Ganging up on someone 'different' and bashing you just because you dont believe in what they believe in.

Those aren't the only people in the world.

Take a deep breath, and find someone who truly accepts you, so that the fear will go away.

There are plenty of people here who will.

You are a human being like everyone else! You just have your own belief.
Everyone of us has to leave some day, but it's not the grave stone or the monument that keeps people in memory of others! It is yourself, what and how you are that stays in peoples hearts. And when they keep you in their hearts you won't be forgotten!

"It is the unknown we fear when we look upon death and darkness, nothing more." -Albus Dumbledore

Religion isn't the key to releasing your fears, you should instead look within yourself to find your beliefs. Listen to what your heart tells you will happen when you pass. Even if you believe that you fade away into nothing though realize this:

"a person does not truly die until they are forgotten."
