I do this too, Secret teller. Sometimes it's cathartic to listen to the problems of others, because you can find it people that have it worse than you. When I was 13, I signed an oath in blood that I'd listen to anyone with problems that chose to confide in me.
Don't be afraid to vent, don't be afraid to cry.

I'd recommend a dog for situations like these. Really great animals, lick your face off, always need you, always there to listen, and every day they see you it's like they've discovered the universe.

Always happen to me. Sadly, we care about people but those people don't seem to care about us.
People are dumb.
And then, we call them friend.
Maybe I just have "bad friends".

I've been there many times, remember this when you feel weak, it's okay. You're never truly alone even if no one's there to sooth your fears and wipe your tears because someone, somewhere knows exactly what you're going through and would be there in a heartbeat if only they knew you.

Mostly it's because I won't let them help me. I refuse to let them get close, and it ruins a lot of things. But I can't help it. I don't let them in, because I WOULD NEVER LET THEM LEAVE AGAIN.

What I don't understand is why people who insist on complaining about these don't just move on and not comment. The positive feedback that these secrets receive shows that they are obviously enjoyed. There are some cases, such as the "daily quotes" thing that were other peoples quotes just taken from the internet without proper sourcing and put on a black backdrop; that I don't agree with, but this, people are sharing a part of themselves, and isn't that part of what art is in and of itself? So I don't understand all the hostility towards DAS. I think that some of these secrets are a great way of showing how we can all relate in one way or another, all the bad, and the good, it shows people they aren't alone and in a way it offers a form of support. The DAS page has numbers, websites, links for people who need support, and they have an enormous following, so something is obviously coming of this, and yet people still complain. Why not just move on if you don't like it?

On this Deviation itself, this was something I really struggled with in highschool and thankfully has gotten better over time, where my friends have matured, where I have matured. There are many times I still feel alone, but the difference is that now that I'm older I know that I'm not truly alone and if I ever needed that shoulder to cry on I could reach out and just ask for it. Though sometimes it would be nice if my friends and family were just intuitive enough to know, but there is only so much people are capable of. I hope things get easier for you, whoever you are.

I agree with most of what you said but I can understand that people are getting annoyed by constantly seeing this sort of thing. While some of the people posting it genuinely feel what they are trying to express, just because a text or composition is being used by its creator to 'share a part of themselves' does not necessarily mean it is 'art', and so some people will naturally feel that this forum is not the place for it. On the other hand, if this is an art forum and people are submitting such compositions as 'art', some people might feel that the composition is therefore submitted with the expectation that it will receive criticism or at least that the author accepts that criticism will be given, just as any art form is usually made subject to potential criticism or praise when it is submitted on an art forum. Hence, I think many of the people complaining also feel that as 'art' it can be criticised for not being executed very well (and I'm not saying that I agree or disagree with that) and due partly to the heavy use of certain terms and phrases which may come across as cliché to some people, there may be a relatively larger portion of criticism than praise which people as yourself might themselves find unacceptable.

Like in this particular deviation: I myself can relate to something this person is essentially conveying - Constantly investing emotional energy into people with little return can be detrimental to your health (and not just emotional health). Some people, though, might feel that this idea is profound but that the way in which it is conveyed or perhaps even what they perceive to be a lack of attention to how significantly it is stressed demonstrates almost a certain ignorance of sorts (which I myself wouldn't use as a basis for criticising the way someone expresses themselves, especially when it comes to emotional troubles which can be very hard to understand seeing as how they usually don't depend very much on our cognitive or reasoning abilities).

Others might feel they can relate but would perhaps prefer it if they didn't come on an art forum to constantly be reminded of the negative emotions most people will experience at some point in their life which they might possibly feel are being expressed as if they are unique to an individual. Some people want to voice their opinions which they feel are just as valid as the texts which they are criticising while some people are just trolls.

I think these might be some of the reasons why some people insist on complaining. I also think people would agree that the end justifies the means perhaps if certain alternatives were pursued at least to minimise to what extent these reasons exist. Once again, I'm not saying these means aren't justified; I'm just posting to try and provide some insight into what seems to be a minority. Of course, certain extents of hostility are certainly unjustifiable. Anyways, peace be the journey; have a good one mate! :)

Oh I can definitely see where you're coming from. And I can agree wholeheartedly that the definition of art is very loosey goosey at best. We all have a very different notion of what art is, and what constitutes as good, art especially. In this regard, I can agree with your sentiments towards some of the negative criticism. I can even see every other point that you've made. Mostly, I guess what I'm trying to relay is,

"If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all." - Thumper.

I'm a full supporter of constructive criticism, even if that criticism is negative. And in DAS I endorse this as well, since this is an art community and should be treated as such. I definitely would like to see more of the DAS Secrets spruced up, but I understand there is a different level of ability for every person, and many people can't do much better, or there is the risk of a specific style linking a person back to their account.

I would just like to see the negative feedback be constructive versus the vicious attacks that we see now. The "Get a blog." or "Cry me a river." These are the kinds of comments I'm referring to. I would like to see alternatives as well, but I also would like to see understanding. Compromise exists only if both sides are willing to do it.

Thank you for the comment, this did help me look at the issue, and I like hearing the other side being presented in a way that is not vicious, and is forthright. So I thank you for that. The issue has just become such an area for debate and contention on dA, it is actually distressing. I stand by most of what I said, but I definitely do see where you are coming from, particularly in how you explain the discontent. Now if those who were bothered by these could use language that was non-harmful and non-abasing I think that would be a great step forward.

Have a good day, yourself. :)

Thank you. I try not to incite commentators, however, when I see some of the comments left on the DAS page, or on the Secrets, I'm often quite appalled, because people are forgetting that the people who shared these secrets are just that, real people. They aren't bots or machines, they are living, breathing, human beings who have put their troubles out there and are being ripped apart and told that their feelings are hogwash or unimportant, that the effort they put into their secret (some of them beautifully done) are not truly art, and that their voice does not belong on dA. It makes me sad, and it also shows me why we live in a world where so many people rely on an anonymous service to share their deepest feelings, because if this is how we feel and they are treated in real life, it's no wonder so many people don't talk about their problems. I just wish people would take some time to think before they ridicule, and put themselves in the shoes of the person sharing the secret.

Guys. Seriously. Get your own website and have people who actually want these things post on them. Then you wouldn't have people complaining all the time and you could occasionally post ones on here. That way everyone would be happy. Unless you really are just looking for attention.

Not necessarily, I meant the people who post DAS. They get tons of attention for things that other people make. And those things really shouldn't be considered art in the first place. I think it would go down a lot better if they just got their own website where all the secrets got the same amount of attention, so that the supposed "help" everyone is always saying people want on here gets distributed to more than just a few a day.

Ah. I thought you meant that the Secret Tellers were seeking attention. That's true. They probably post on here, though, because a different website would take a while to get popular, and if no one is reading the secrets, then there really isn't a point to send secrets in the first place.

A few of the secrets I'd consider art -- but the same repetitive secrets are getting monotone. If one secret is sent in that says what one person is feeling, should the one person really say exactly what the first secret said in another submission? It doesn't make sense, but that seems to be what people are doing. These posts were meant to share and connect, not share and repeat.

I know what you mean.
I thought about turning in a DAS that said something about how my life is often summed up in this quote from the first LOTR movie:
"You give hope to men."
"I keep none for myself."

It's tough being everyone's shoulder and not having your own. But you know, there are people who care, if you open up. It won't be just anyone you open up to, but there are those of us out there. We know how you feel. And we can be each other's shoulder.
If you want to, please note me (or anyone else reading this who feels the same). I don't mind being the one you vent or talk to. We can each be that for each other. ^^

This is me, some days. I have a shoulder big enough for everyone I care about and a few more to cry on, and I'm always ready to listen to others to see if I can help somehow, even if all I can ever offer are encouraging and kind words, but now and then, I'm the one that needs a shoulder, an ear, and a kindly given 'everything's going to be alright'. But I don't have anyone to listen to those problems. I cn pick myself up, but someday, I know it's going to be too much to get up on my own.
