Try bringing it up casually, don't tell her who it is your talking about and say you want her opinion since your so close, ask her what she'd do if she was in your place or something, if it goes well ask how she'd feel if it was her, as advice for how someone would react, if she's really your friend it'll be ok things won't get awkward, maybe she'll feel the same, or get to that point
The same happened to me, I fell in love with a friend I'd known for years, I was lucky because she felt the same, but it didn't last then, I never thought of my girlfriend as more then a friend, until I stopped and looked at how much she was there and cared, and it turned out she had wanted to tell me how she felt for years
It could work out! And if it doesn't, if she's really your friend it'll still be ok
