I think one thing you shouldn't do is use your father as an excuse to act this way. I think another reason why you act this way is because you are around him a lot and it takes effect on you. Take yourself away from that environment. Become your own person. Only you can change and shape who you want to be.

This sounds exactly like my ex-boyfriend.

So I'll give you the advice that he would never take from me. Don't just accept that you're like him! Fight it! Fight it as hard as you can. It's no good to be aware of your problems if you're unwilling to change. Reach out to others and confide in them. Check yourself whenever you lie or think an arrogant thought. You can change, but you have to really try.

the first step to making a change is being self aware. Once that happens, you can make changes.

Unfortunately, children become more and more like their parents. People rub off on others. It's a psychological thing. Some people are able to steer themselves away from the wrong path, yet they always have traces of their family in them.

I know how you feel. I hate it, too. My father treats people with little respect unless it involves money, and he isn't really close to anyone. I find that I am like him...far more than I'd like to admit. I get angry like he does. I treat people with rudeness and/or hate whether I mean to or not. I can only try to hide under a false happiness.

The only thing, really, is to concentrate on the good things that the person does. Focusing on the negative causes those habits to invade your mind. Thinking of the positive aspects of your family and friends helps you to be a better person. Seeing the bright side tends to ward off depression as well as other unpleasant emotions/thoughts. I wish you good luck, Secret Teller, and I hope you find the light.

Whoever wrote this or relates to this needs to listen to the song "Emotional Drought" by Chevelle. There is one line that I am specifically thinking of: "There's a choice to not end up like you"

I can agree with this.

My mom is constantly telling me to control my issues or I'll become like my father, who is a criminal. I don't want to be like him, dammit! ;-; I wanna be able to control it, but I can't! I love my dad, but I won't lie, he isn't the best role model.

For me its my mom. She's become a basket-case type of person, doesn't do anything with her life other than wallow in self pity and make endless excuses to the people around her, trying to get them to give her compassion. I hate that she does that and is completely unchanging, her mind works in a circle and she refuses to get out of it.

She has Bi Polar disorder. I'm scared I'm going to be diagnosed, and I am going to become like her. Taking endless drugs and ceasing to have any quality of life.

I hate the idea that kids can so easily be a copypaste of their parents.

My mother is bi-polar too... sad thing is my adoptive mother told me all the time when I was growing up that I was just like my birth mother and that I should never have kids and never get married because I was doomed to fail... fortunately I have a stubborn streak the size of Texas and made it my goal to prove my adoptive mother wrong... Sometimes I wonder though if my adoptive mother knew that rather than admit defeat I would work harder to not be like my birth mother... I like to think that anyways... it sure beats believing that the on woman I could look up to didn't believe in me

Same here. I feel sick knowing that I look more like him than my mom. And he constantly says things to me like, "You (insert odd habit) just like I do. Because you're my kid." I absolutely hate it.

If you're conscious of it that means you can change. It won't be easy, and I do suggest seeing a therapist (and trust me, I'm only saying that because therapy helped me with my issues). I wish you strength in overcoming this.

You don't have to become like him, though. You have the power to be a good person. You are in control of who you are. Take that power and be better than him. I support you, I know you can do it! <3

Learn Meditation, See a therapist or a psychiatrist, be peacful and open minded. If you want, learn a new language, travel places. You can be everything unlike your dad.

Break free and just be who you are without the negativity.

Aw, I hope you can break free. If you ever need to talk you can message me. My door is open. I also was in a very similar situation, and when you make the mental decision that "Enough is enough." All you have left is the choice to move on and find ways to be different.

Thank you  One thing that has really helped me is my martial arts dojo. We live by a code of honor and compassion, and at the beginning of class we recite it. It embodies everything I want to be and everything he isn't.

Thats nice :D The Martial arts is also a form of releasing tension and letting go. Helping one to become Flexible and precise. I taught myself Japanese without any help to prove that I can learn something that he hated to pieces by Myself. (Not to mention I loved the Japanese culture at the time) Its the little things that really help. Even if its reliving a passion that he might have closed the door too. I'm always living my passion to watch anime and read manga.

Its also key to know that choosing an opposite just to say "I am different" isn't always going to help. Be Yourself Naturally. If you force yourself to be different and Change who you are to be different, then its actually bad for your health because its connected to him. Be sure to choose to do it because YOU want to do it. ;) Something that took me awhile to learn.

You're never alone with it. Hell, it's like that but with my Mother. Strength, you have it. Use it. Like Solum-Ipsum said, kill your father within you, beat it at it's own game. 83
