LOL YES. My accent is so weird, I cringe when people ask me to talk about my dog.

Because, when I say doggie, people think it's hilarious. One posted it on youtube....

I didn't even know I had a slight accent (New York) until I traveled away from home and thought everybody else sounded weird! It was fun to be different though.

Funny thing... I started to speak in my regions dialect again when I started university, because there were more people from the countryside there who still have a strong accent (compared to in school) so I didn't feel so very out of place any more.

Apparently I talk like a newscaster and it bores everyone to death, so rejoice in your accent! I'm from Boston and can't even say "pahk the cah in Havaahd yahd" the right way.

Honestly, you do not need to worry about this ST. :)

I just finished my first year of University, and I lived with a girl from Newcastle (Thick Geordie accent, imagine Cheryl Cole's accent if you dunno how it sounds) and a girl from Southampton, and then a girl from London. I'm from the Midlands myself and so we all had very different accents, being from all over the country. And that was only my flat!
At University I met people from all over, every place in the country and quite a lot of international students, including Chinese, Greek, Polish, Russians... etc. You don't need to worry about how you sound because trust me there will be plenty of people with different accents but it's part of the beauty of going to a University, you get to meet people from ALL over. And no one is going to mind that you have an accent that is different to theirs, if anything they might notice your accent and think it's cool or fascinating, and be really interested as to where you came from. :)
All the best!

There is no reason to feel that way! Most people enjoy different accents. They may lightly tease, but that is nothing to be ashamed of. Your accent is part of who you are and people will like you for that part among many others!

I go to university and I adore hearing the accents of my peers. I learn so much, and it is a wonderful change from the same sound of the local voices. I met a guy in my acting class how hid his Scottish accent, but when he was comfortable around everyone, he would let it out. And it made for an amazing monologue for the final performance. The sound of a voice, no matter how strange or unheard make the person speaking unique and interesting. Don't hide your accent because you are afraid.

Depends on your region, most people find accents nice, but there are some really anti-southern people in the north of the US, like people saying, "Oh you must be a jerk because your from the south." because they here it in their accent. Most people don't care though, an accent is an accent and unless there's a lot of competition between the area your going to and your home, there isn't much to worry about.

Don't! An accent is something to be proud of, i live in California and go to a university there, but still talk with a Chicago accent because that's where I'm from and I'm proud of it!

Besides, I sit by people with accents in college just because I know they're from somewhere else and probably have interesting stories. I've met some of the most interesting people that way.

I love accents!
At my university are not only different accents spoken, also some dialects.
Even some lecturers have accents, it's hard to understand for non-native-speakers, but I love it.
Don't be afraid, I'm sure there are also crazy acccentlovers at your university :)

I have a thick cajun accent from where I live in Louisiana. When I got to school I tried to hide it, and it just made me uncomfortable when I tried to talk. Eventually, the real accent would slip out and my friends thought it was cute! Most people don't get the chance to meet people from other places, and it's a chance to be proud of where you're from! Don't be ashameddd, be stong!

I went to a University near my region and people would ask me if I were foreign because of my accent. :XD: But my accent came not from my region, but from all the foreign films I watch. I loved it! I've been asked if I were from the UK, Scandinavia, Canada, etc. But really, I'm 100% Californian!

Have fun with your accent and when meeting new people, make it a game on who can guess where your accent is from!

Don't worry about it, nobody will genuinely judge you. It doesn't matter whether you're going away from home or not - I'm at a university in Yorkshire (Northern England) and I've lived in a town next to it my entire life, so had a fairly strong accent when I started, and I get the people who take the mick and play on regional stereotypes (but never seriously) and those who outwardly express their love for it. It doesn't matter which university you go to, because you'll be mixing with people from all around the country there, not just that region. If people do joke about your accent then make fun of where they come from, because... well, banter.

The beauty of university is that you get to mix with so many different people and learn about so many different regions, accents, dialects and cultures. I've learnt a lot from other people and they've learnt a lot from me. If your problem is that you don't actually like your accent and want it to change, it'll probably get diluted anyway.

In my case, I've got a glorious mix of scummy accents going on (South Yorkshire/Black Country/Scouse) along with some standard English, depending on how familiar I am with who I'm talking to. I could easily complain, but I've decided to embrace it instead. I hope you do too.

Accents are awesome.
Honestly, they really are.

Every person is this amalgamation of all these different things, all taken together - and that includes your accent, where you're from and how you speak, what you say. I think that is awesome and a world without accents is a droll and dull thing indeed. So take heart.

I had this fear as well. In my time at university I did not speak much.
The thing is though, you shouldn't worry about your accent, because universities are places where people of every accent mix together.
There will be other people there with the same accent as you.

Some fellow students of mine did have a regional accent, too. But they adopted the way of speaking the people here have. They just speak with it again, when they returned from a visit home. So, don't be afraid, the accents will mingle anyway.
