Honestly, It sounds like a mixture of nostalgia and and idealised idea of your childhood friend... but that's going on very little, sol it may be inaccurate

You definitely need to break up with your current boyfriend/girlfriend...it is not fair nor kind to them in ANY way. You may be pained because you cannot be with the person you care about, but imagine if you were and then one day after months, maybe even years, of seemingly "happy" and requited love together, they told you they never loved you like you did them, that all of this time they have been dreaming of someone else, and that their heart does not belong to you, like your's belongs to them. How would that make you feel? My guess is that it would make you feel like utter crap and you would have a VERY hard time moving on from that.
So do yourself and your current SO a huge favor, and break-up. Go look for your childhood sweetheart. But do not keep someone else on hold just to "be safe". You are killing them every day you drag it out.

Don't be with someone you don't love. Don't string them alone. It is infinitely cruel to play with someone's emotions. It is not all about you, you, you. Other people have issues, other people have problems, other people loves and want to be loved. Someone might even want to be loved by you.

And pretending to love someone while loving someone else is absolutely despicable.
