I know how you feel. I'm both a writer and an artist. I always think I'm good, until I look at my sister's art. Long story short, my art looks unprofessional compared to my sister's art. Even in writing, my sister's stories are always better than mine. But then I remember back to 4th grade where my fictional narrative writing assessment got all 5's, which is the second score you can get on the assessment. Keep writing, anonymous person! I have faith in you that you will become a world-renowned author and write many award winning books!:la:

My friends and siblings are all good at drawing and every other type of art... And I'm only good at writing... My siblings shoot me down. Every time I try drawing, or write something new. A new poem, "Its horrible." "It makes no sense." "I don't like it." or a new story, "It makes no sense, what is the plot?" "Why did you write this?" "It sucks." or try drawing, "hahaha, what is THAT supposed to be?" "That looks weird." "Shes ugly." "He looks like a girl."

I always assumed they were being mean, but really, they knew I could do better. And they pushed until I made it.
Now I draw better than my friends, but there not good drawings, and write even better than before.
Sometimes there not being mean... Just pushing you to go farther when they know you can.

Do what you feel you must do, do it with your heart, do it to satisfy yourself. You and your thoughts are more important, and if you practice hard you'll be good at drawing as well.

Don't be ashamed of writing! I've been a fiction writer for as long as I can remember and I love being able to create and express worlds and characters through words.

I know how you feel about wanting to do something else artistic. All of my friends are amazing drawers, and I get jealous since I'm terrible at it. But even though I can't draw, I'd never give up my passion of writing for anything, and you shouldn't hate what you do.

I know how it feels.
I guess the best advice i can give you is that no matter what, so long as you truly care about and put your blood, sweat, and passion into your art, its going to be beautiful.

If I knew the author behind this, I would immediately request several pictures and a commission if I could afford it. I know JUST how that feels, and it depresses me every day because I just want to be a painter, a sculptor, anything that my heart desires.

Awww, dearest, you are so lucky if you are able to create art using words!
For you see, I draw semi-well (although my dA won't prove that as my scanner's been down for quite some time), but as far as writing, I'm the only one in my circle of friends who is absolute crap at it. They often look at whatever "poem" I've written and kindly advise that I stick to illustration.

I hate only being a writer too. Everyone in my family does music and I cant even write music. They say they don't want to sit and read "that whole damn book" and so they don't know what I can do. I feel your pain, ST

I understand how you and the others that can relate to this feel. I've tried drawing before, but my art just doesn't rate to that of my artistic group of friends or the users on this site. I get plenty of ideas for things to draw, but instead of drawing them myself I have to ask a friend to draw it for me, which I hate doing because I wish I could just do it myself.

But writing is an excellent skill to have. I bring joy to my friends by writing fan fiction and entertaining stories. I can express how I feel through poetry. And being able to write well will help me with my college essays, not to mention I've aced every writing assignment I've ever had, even the ones that I completely BS at midnight the night before they're due.

So what I'm trying to say is, embrace the talents that you do have and be confident in yourself. Work with what you've been given and focus on writing. Become the best damn writer you can. And if your friends keep shooting you down when you try and produce artwork, screw them. If you'd like, then keep trying. But the way I see it, writing is a form of art too. So why don't you make them wish that they could write the way you do? :)

I relate to this so well.

Sometimes I hate the fact that I'm a writer because in my age group, it doesn't mean anything. If I could draw, the talent would be worth something, but the fact that I can write, is worthless. No one cares, and when I tell people I write, they look at me like I'm crazy.

But I found out that it does matter to people, other than the snotty brats in my grade. My teachers appreciate it, and my parents do, and I don't care what my friends think, because writing is such a big part of me that they could never destroy it. They don't know anything about writing, and if it's not con-crit that is worth it, I don't listen. You don't have to either. Writing is an art form, maybe not the same as visual art, but it's still art. I don't get requests, and that's not a judgement of how well you write. As long as you do it, and it makes you happy, I think that's all that matters.

And no, you're not being selfish, because I've wished these things as well. I think most writers have wished to be acknowledged.

I'm the same way as you, ST. I'm the writer of my group. Though I'm not the worst drawer of them, I'm probably the least confident.

I understand exactly how you feel, but keep at it. Some day you'll be able to draw to a standard you're happy with, or at least end up happy being the writer. Personally I find a lot of freedom in writing. You can do so much more with it. Can't draw someone crying? You can sure as hell write it and portray the same amount of emotion, if not more.

The written word is, in my humble opinion, the most beautiful weapon.

I hope you can find happiness in whatever you end up good at, ST. All the luck <3

Don't call yourself a writer :P

Everyone is a writer. Anyone can pick up a pencil and write a few words if they learn.

No, if you're really good at what you do, then you're an AUTHOR :D

I understand being the only writer of the group, but if your friends aren't supporting you there is a huge issue! Written words are just as artistic as a drawing; and nobody has the right to say otherwise. If your friends can't accept that, find some other friends to share your skill with (not saying ditch the friends you have; but they don't deserve to see your art if they're not going to accept the differences between you and them).

I'd be more then happy to help you with your writing; you're free to send me a note on deviantart, or contact me via FastPencil [link] , a site created for writers and the like, or through my tumblr blog [link] (Tumblr allows for anonymous asks, and while the replies are public it can help keep your identity secret).

I also have a writing resource list on my profile, I'll post it below for you to look at :) There are plenty of sites full of writers like you who would LOVE to read and critique your work!

Oh, I would also like to add that ANYONE can write!

I myself have many language issues that I was told would "hinder" my written communication. Even dyslexics and people with dyspraxia can be great writers! They just have to put in the effort, and find the right inspiration and encouragement!

I kinda know how you feel... 2 of my close friends are very talented artists, and both of them have only been drawing seriously for about a year, and it makes me extremely jealous, frustrated, etc. because I've been drawing for almost 4 years now and I'm not even half as good as either of them... oh well, practice makes progress.. right?

Seek peace in yourself, not in the opinions of the ignorant. Read works of great minds and lesser minds, find the differences and similarities. Surround yourself with those whom would have you and your work brought up into the world of praise. Never once think that the work you do is what you are to be judged on, hold that rule above all others.

I have no idea if the person who wrote the secret will see this, but if they do, then maybe you can use this. Make them see just how passionate you are about your writing. You have a right to express yourself and use your creativity with skills you gained and talents you've been given. It doesn't mater if you use brushes, paint, clay, pencils, ink, computer software, cameras, needle and thread, carving tools, or kitchen utensils. If you put your heart into what you create, it's art. Have pride in what you create, however you create.
And if any of the people you regularly ask for input don't take you seriously, then tell those nominal artists to read Fahrenheit 451, and to appreciate other literature and the ARTISTS who created pieces which have transcended lifetimes. Real friends might be harsh and tell you to get better, but they will be supportive of you and your dream to create. They will also tell you what you can improve on instead of just shooting your work down. Leave the others to their closed minds. Forgive me if I sound like I am insulting your friends, as you probably love them for more reasons than for them to just be other artists to associate with, and it is not my intention to insult anyone. But I feel what I say is true. No one has the right to look down on your work, and you don't have to deal with those who do.

OMFG I FEEL THE EXACT SAME WAY.

NO FRICKEN JOKE.

Any time I ask for help with my art, they just always diss it and say that that's the best I'm going to get. Which makes me sad. That's why I love looking at tutorials on stuff. It makes me feel like I'm getting better.

Anytime I show my friends me stuff, they also just bring my hopes down.

And, I'm a massive writer of FanFiction. Really. It's the only thing I'm good at.

But, what I'm hoping for, one day, is that I practice so much that they will be able to finally see that even I, the "pathetic attempter", will finally be as good as them.

Thanks for saying that my stuff is good. Personally, I think it's nothing compared to some of the people here.

You would give me critiques? Thanks! I don't really know you, but you seem like the person that wouldn't be harsh like my friends.

Actually, the person that is the worst critique to me is actually fighting me right now, and using the line saying that her artwork is better then mine.

I plan to become a writer when I get older.... So, she has nothing on me. :)

Thanks.

 I'm glad I could lift your spirits.

You should never compare your work to that of another's; everyone is different and advances at different speeds. I also find that you notice your "mistakes", because you know exactly how you wanted it to be, but you don't notice the "mistakes" of others as easily; because you have no idea what they wanted it to be.

And I'd be more then happy to give you critique! ^^ All you have to do is ask me, and I will!

Nobody should ever say their work is better then someone else's. People aim for different styles and different effects, so it's never going to be the same. Find what you want to aim for (anatomy, effects, landscapes, etc) and work on it! Some people improve at different rates, but sometimes those who improve too fast get stuck because they don't learn the theory; only the practice. So they don't understand what it is they've done.

Becoming a writer is hard; but definitely achievable! I suggest that you enter contests when you can - even if you don't think you're going to win - because just putting the effort into the contest helps you improve... And who knows, you might win! There are some awesome surprises in the world! ^-^
I could also give you a list of self-publishing sites if you want! You may have to print up the books yourself, and give them to local book stores, but it's a great way to start getting your name out there.
