There is an article called What's Wrong With Animal Rights by Vicki Hearne that I believe is good for this subject--[link]

I think it is good that we act to find the best lifestyle for animals. We want them to be happy. But the interesting thing is that humans tend to reflect their own values and thinking onto other species. We assume that others think like us (individually and as a species). We would naturally think that animals would want to be free, because we like the idea of freedom and we tend to think of animals in nature as normal and good for the animal, but we are making assumptions based on emotions. Perhaps if you reflected the same circumstances on yourself you might say that you would prefer safety by restrictions instead of being out in the wild where you might not live long and where you would be in constant struggle. Still, it comes back to personal preferences that may be formed by psychology and biology. With domesticated animals, they might be happier because adrenaline is lower. Maybe that is a substantial factor that would support not holding wild animals in captivity. Anyhow, I think we should take a scientific approach to finding out what animals prefer. Making them happiest according to their own values is what I'd like to see. But this is still a very difficult task....

I agree with you and I think animals should not be taken out of the wild and placed in captivity. Although captive bred animals are probably better adjusted. But, all in all, I don't think there should be zoos, circuses that involve animals, and aquariums. I don't see the point in trying to save endangered species either. Although I do appreciate good sanctuaries.

Depends, I can understand if it was captured from the wild, but usually animals bred in captivity are pretty happy. But wild animals should be left as they are.

*sigh* The breeding programs in Zoo's and aquariums are saving entire species. Believe it or not, most of them are actually very good places.

I'm sure a lot of zoos save species, but I'm not sure if the OP chose a killer whale for a reason or not... as far as I know, there are NO campaigns to save the critically endangered Southern Resident orcas in the United States. Not all zoos are good, imo.

That's why I said most. :grump:

But I believe she chose the Orca because of the PETA controversy about the SeaWorld chain of parks. They compared the whales to human slaves, which itself is ridiculous and offensive.

There are of zoos both in and out of the United States that take very poor care of their animals, I realize that, but I think when your debating on whether or not to shut them all down in the name of animal rights, the good outweighs the bad.

I think you mean the bad outweighs the good?

Anyway, I don't think anyone believed that PETA was going to win the case. Gosh no. The reason why I don't find it offensive though, is because they are actually much more intelligent then we previously knew or understood. They're smarter than young children, have complex behaviours, culture, and even give each other their own names.

Anyway, this is a very good video about dolphins in general. You're welcome to your opinion, and I don't think marine parks/zoos will close down for a very long time.
